At approximately 1:10am this morning, the Cottleville Fire Protection District, assisted by Central County Fire and Rescue, responded for a reported house fire at 538 Highfield Drive in St. Charles County.

Firefighters arrived to find the home heavily involved leaving them no choice but make a defensive attack; they had confirmed that all occupants had escaped safely. The home and three cars are a total loss. Two cats were lost in the fire, no one else was injured.

The home owners were asleep when the fire started. Their grandchildren, approximately 10-12 years of age, noticed smoke coming from around the garage door into the kitchen. They alerted he home owners who then woke their teenage daughter from a basement bedroom and evacuated the home. The grandchildren’s quick actions are the reason everyone, especially the young lady in the basement, was able to escape safely.

Investigators have ruled the fire accidental, most likely caused by smoking materials discarded in a trash receptacle in the garage.
