For over 65 years, filling-the-boot for MDA has been a firefighter tradition. Members of the International Association of Firefighters collect donations each summer to support the programs and treatments of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. “This year is going to look different,” says Cottleville Fire District Battalion Chief Rusty Shelton, “we need to keep everyone apart. Collecting in person isn’t practical right now.” IAFF Local 2665 and the MDA are expecting fewer donations this year due to the same concerns all across Eastern Missouri.
In an effort to fundraise despite the pandemic, Cottleville Firefighters collected a donation from its members totaling $11,500.00 for MDA. “We hope this helps our partner to keep providing services to children that need them,” said Cottleville Fire District Shop Steward Ben Toedebusch. The Cottleville Firefighters have also encouraged other firefighters in the area to consider donating directly as well. “We ask our community for help every year,” said Shelton, “we want the public to know that this means a lot to us.”
